· Everybody needs encouragement and it means more when recognized with an audience
· It motivates people to do their best; positive reinforcement
· The one encouraging benefits by building trusting relationships
· Encouragement can spread creating a more positive climate
· Encouraging others can be easy to start doing
· It makes the workplace more enjoyable
· The encourager becomes a leader with integrity
· If not done correctly, it becomes insincere
· If the encouragement is not earned it is not authentic
· It might help teachers focus on positive things
· Encouraging students happens everyday and we should do the same to our colleagues
· Has potential for a “trickle-down effect” (i.e., students encouraging other students)
· A must when parenting
Our overall assessment is that this is a sound philosophy backed by research and real life situations. Studying Kouzes and Posner’s work certainly has increased our awareness of strong leadership skills. The Seven Essentials have clearly outlined what it takes to be an effective encourager. Upon reflection of this philosophy of leadership with others, we look forward to the new school year, as it will shape our daily interactions.
